This position's preferred location may be Central Office (St. Paul) or another northern fisheries office. Final determination of location will be based on the candidate preference and space availability.

This position exists to plan, supervise, and provide technical direction for the statewide fisheries research program, that provides information, knowledge, and new methods essential to improve the fisheries program and management decisions as well as providing expert scientific advice and instruction on new techniques; performing supervisory, fiscal, and administrative functions to ensure an efficient research program with motivated research staff; supervising and guiding the preparation of research reports and presentations for use by division managers, administrators, the public, and the professional fisheries community; providing leadership for collaborative working relationships with internal and external professionals so that scientific expertise can be provided to solve fisheries and other related environmental problems; keeping informed in fisheries biology, population dynamics, aquatic biology, and related fields; and conducting independent advanced research and special investigations as directed.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree (MS/MA) in fisheries, aquatic biology, fisheries or aquatic ecology or closely related field.

Three years of experience in the area of fisheries research including primary responsibility for designing, executing, and publishing research.

Experience providing supervision or serving as a lead worker for employees, directing the work and communicating the status, needs, objectives, goals, and recommendations for a large scale or statewide program.

Exceptional personal and written communication skills as well as oral presentation skills (2 peer reviewed publications and 3 oral presentations at professional meetings).

Conflict management training or experience to analyze and resolve ambiguous or controversial situations and make difficult decisions on policy/program direction and/or personnel.

Considerable knowledge of scientific techniques and procedures involved in planning, executing, evaluating and reporting experimental research in the biological sciences.

Ability to prepare and review/edit reports and papers on the results of research projects.

Ability to collaborate on large scale projects involving a diverse team from a variety of scientific disciplines.

Ability to organize, execute and evaluate research activities independently and to correlate findings from a variety of scientific disciplines.

Demonstrated computer skills including knowledge of databases, spreadsheets and word processing sufficient to create and write reports, access and analyze data, and perform statistical analysis.

Advanced statistical and analytic skills to conduct research and evaluate others' research.

Considerable knowledge of current literature on research activities relating to aquatic sciences.

Public relations skills sufficient to relate to meeting with groups at a lay terminology level.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in fisheries, aquatic biology or closely related field.

Service in a professional organization such as a committee chair, elected position, or associate journal editor.

Certification by AFS as a Fisheries Scientist.

Experience with budget management, hiring, or other administrative activities.

Additional Requirements

This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver's License with a clear driving record.
