Job Description:

Responsibilities

The Assistant Research Scientist will work as part of the national Environmental Health Specialist Network (EHS-Net), a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded program focusing on innovative food safety projects and evaluating surveillance efforts to improve reporting of outbreaks. The incumbent will assist in the collaboration with the New York State Department of Health Emerging Infections Program, OutbreakNet Enhanced Program, Wadsworth Center Laboratories and the New York Integrated Food Safety Center of Excellence (CoE). Nationally recognized as leaders in epidemiology, environmental health, laboratory science, information technology, public health quality improvement and food safety science, the New York State Department of Health, in partnership with Cornell University, was designated by CDC in 2016 as a regional CoE.

The incumbent will participate with CDC and other EHS-Net sites to assist in the development and implementation of research studies associated with food service establishments and the identification of environmental antecedents and contributing factors associated with foodborne disease outbreak investigations.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Statistics/Biostatistics or related field and one year of research experience. A master's degree in a related field may substitute for one year of research experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Graduate degree in epidemiology or another public health field; working knowledge of public health/epidemiology surveillance systems; demonstrated strong written, methodological, and analytical skills with proficiency in statistical programs (e.g. SAS), and Microsoft software (Access, Excel); experience with conducting environmental assessments and research at food service establishments, foodborne disease investigations, implementing research studies and evaluating interventions, and data management/data analysis; Ability to conduct comprehensive literature reviews and assist in preparing presentations, manuscripts for publication, and grant applications.

Conditions of Employment

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting may be available.

Exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position. Therefore, the incumbent in this position may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment including but not limited to eye protection and safety boots.

Travel, up to 10% of the time, will be required.
